Margaret graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1972. She was one of the first intakes in the combination degree BComm LLB and graduated with both degrees.
In 1972 Margaret joined the Brisbane office of Price Waterhouse as a graduate in the firm's tax practice. At that time, taxation advisory was a small but rapidly growing area of the practice for the larger accounting firms and Margaret was able to gain wide experience working for some of Brisbane's largest companies.
Margaret then transferred with Price Waterhouse to Sydney in 1982 where she worked in the Parramatta office and was promoted to partnership in 1983.
Margaret took on the role of the Managing Partner of this office in 1991 and held that role until her return to Brisbane in 1998.
During her time in Sydney, Margaret worked on several Government committees including the Consultative Committee to the Tax Law Improvement Project, the NSW Council on the Cost of Government and the Ministerial Advisory Council on Customs.
As a member of the Federal Government's Wool Working Party, Margaret helped with the restructure of this industry, particularly in the area of research and development.
She also has an interest in medical research and has been a director of the not-for-profit Institute for Magnetic Resonance Research which focuses on early cancer detection.
She also took up a role in television as the finance editor of the "Today" Show on Channel 9. During her years in this role, she covered hundreds of topics on taxation and general finance matters of interest to the broader public.
In recent years, Margaret's professional career has moved from taxation to the management of special industry focus groups within PricewaterhouseCoopers including technology, transport, education and healthcare. Margaret was the National Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers' Government practice and also a member of the Board of Partners of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Since retiring from PwC in August 2005 Margaret is a non-executive Director, sitting on the board of Australia Post.
When not working Margaret's interests run to classic cars (she is the proud owner of a 1958 XK 150 Jaguar Roadster) and sailing. With a keen love of animals, she is also a trustee to The World Wide Fund for Nature. Margaret is married to Roger, a company executive. |
